Where to find local weather information?

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Because of our location, geography, and variances in elevation, I often find it difficult to get accurate forecasts and information about our local Nevada County weather from the major weather websites and other weather news sources. But, there is a local man who is a weather expert and studies and posts almost daily information (and often several times per day) for a hobby that can benefit us all!

Visit this local Nevada County weather blog for weather predictions, videos, photos, and information about current weather in the Grass Valley and Nevada City areas.

Let it snow!

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Most of us in the Grass Valley and Nevada City area woke up today with a light dusting of snow outside our windows. For us, it was just enough for a snow ball fight in our downtown Grass Valley yard with my 2-year old son. But, get ready for more. The National Weather Service says Tuesday night snow levels at 2500 feet, dropping to 1900 feet on Wednesday before rising again. Friday, and possibly going into Saturday, snow levels of 2700 feet.

So, what should we do this week in Nevada County? If you like the snow, pull out your snow shoes and drive for a few minutes East on Highway 20. White Cloud is only 15 minutes or so outside Nevada City, and has a fun snow play area for sledding or snowman building, and miles of trails for snow-shoeing and cross country skiing. Of course, we’re only 45 minutes from Boreal, the closest resort for downhill skiing and snow boarding.

If you’re not so fond of the snow and rain we’re having this week, look for indoor activities.  The Imaginarium is having their preschool play day on Tuesday, February 10th from 9am-12pm for preschool age, and they are having an Open to the Public day on Saturday, February 21st, from noon-5pm. Or, drop by Summer Thymes on Colfax Avenue in Grass Valley any day for a tasty hot drink to stay warm. You could always take in a movie downtown at the classic Del Oro Theater.

White Christmas for Grass Valley?

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

The NOAA weather site says “yes” with an 80% chance of precipitation in Grass Valley on Christmas Day.  Their winter weather advisory states:
ANOTHER COLDER SYSTEM WILL THEN MOVE ACROSS THE REGION CHRISTMAS EVE AND CHRISTMAS DAY…WITH SNOW LEVELS FALLING TO BETWEEN 1500 AND 2000 FEET ON CHRISTMAS DAY.

Fall Color in Grass Valley

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Taking a small walk around Grass Valley this morning (October 10th) revealed that Fall is here in Grass Valley, and I don’t mean just because the temperatures were low (33F as a low today)!  Yes, as well as the nip in the air, the leaves are changing color, but there’s no overall pattern at the moment.

A couple of trees have changed and already lost their leaves, but there’s still a predominance of green leaves in the trees.  Actually this is kind of nice as the trees that have changed and are displaying their autumnal colors are standing out against the green backdrop.

Chilly weekend in store for Nevada County

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Starting Thursday 9th October the weather will feel a little chilly in Nevada County as a cold airmass from canada sweeps south into Nevada and causes temperatures to drop in Northern California.  NOAA predictions call for non wind adjusted temperatures to be in the lower thirties in Grass Valley on Thursday and Friday night.  Now might be a good time to protect any plants that may not like a cold snap.
