Gold Country Gymnastics

Friday, February 20th, 2009

This morning my son and I went to Gold Country Gymnastics in Grass Valley. They offer open gym time to preschoolers on Fridays from 9am-10:30am for $6 per child. It’s a really fun time in a big open room with all kinds of things around for the kids to run off some energy, get exercise, and build their coordination by running, jumping, climbing, rolling, and playing in the in-ground foam pit. My two-year old son has a blast at the gym.

Gold Country Gymnastics offers classes for all ages of children from walking through high school. They have gymnastics classes as well as special tumbling classes, trampoline classes, and they host birthday parties.

Gold Country Gymnastics is located at 110 Spring Hill Drive, Suite 14 in Grass Valley. Take Idaho-Maryland to Spring Hill Drive – take the first right into the parking lot and you will see signs for the gym. Their phone number is 273-3680. Visit the Gold Country Gymnastics website.

Valentine’s Day in Nevada County

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Wondering what to do for Valentine’s Day in Nevada County? This year Valentine’s Day is on a Saturday, so that makes for a fun full day or weekend! These are some of my ideas:

Go wine tasting. Tour our local vineyards dotted around the foothills for a tasty day and lovely scenery. Many of them are open to the public for wine tasting on weekends. Visit Northern Sierra Wine Country for information and maps.  Or, like the sound of wine tasting, but wishing to stay in town? The Lucchesi Winery tasting room in downtown Grass Valley is putting on a Valentine’s Day event. There will be wine tasting, music, hors d’oeuvres, chocolate, and flowers! Visit thisisnevadacounty.com for details about this event.

For a romantic outdoor dining adventure, pack a creative picnic and head to the South Yuba River. Or if you prefer to go out to eat… In downtown Nevada City, try the fondue at Friar Tuck’s, Thai at Sopa Thai, or everything is good at the New Moon. In downtown Grass Valley, Italian always has a romantic flair, so go to Villa Venezia.

Whatever you plan to do on Valentine’s Day, there are many local shops with the Valentine’s Day gifts and treats you need. In downtown Grass Valley, stop in Dorado’s for chocolate, Foothill Flowers of course, Sierra Starr Winery for champagne, and Aimee Taylor’s on Mill Street has some unique jewelry, prints, and other gifts.

Live in your dream town, earn good money

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

There are so many people who have chosen their dream town here in Nevada City or Grass Valley and then made their jobs work around it. People say it’s been great and they would never look back since moving here from the Bay Area or other places!

As cost of living and traffic have risen in cities around the country while technology is advancing, more and more people have been looking at working at home as a great option for a healthy work and home life. Many people are enjoying the quiet life here in Nevada County while still making their big-city money from their home office!

You find telecommuters – professionals who have moved here, but kept their jobs by traveling or by working remotely from a home office.

But even better, you find entrepreneurs! It’s amazing the range of small businesses we have here in Nevada County – retailers, web designers, inventors, writers, artists, ranchers, and the list goes on. It makes for great diversity.

In the past, young professionals would look for the the right job and assume they might have to move around the country to find it. These days that’s changing. Many young adults are feeling that where they live and their quality of life is the first priority, and then they’ll worry about a job.

In Nevada County, we have quality of life – one of the best school systems in California, amazing Sierra foothill scenery, a cultural scene including art, wine, and good restaurants, and most of all, friendly people!

Cornish Christmas in Grass Valley, 2008

Friday, November 14th, 2008

A charming turn-of-the-century setting, the sounds of Cornish Christmas Carolers, Wagon Rides, Jugglers,  Clowns, Cloggers, Christian Rock, Celtic Music, Jazz, Barbershop Quartets, and more highlight this annual Cornish Christmas Celebration in downtown Grass Valley, California.

Grass Valley’s downtown section (Mill St and Main St) is blocked off to motorized traffic, and you can stroll through the historic gold mining town while taking in the festive atmosphere.  The stores feature illuminated windows and the building silhouettes are picked out with strings of lights.

It also makes an excellent event to pick up unique and/or last minute presents.  Many of the stalls are run by local artisans and if you are lacking ideas for that special someone, then this may be just the place to come for inspiration.

Those feeling a little peckish are also well catered for by the numerous food stalls featuring local fare and snacks.  In addition enjoy hot roasted chestnuts, free courtesy of the Grass Valley Downtown Association.

Cornish Christmas 2008 in Grass Valley is happening on November 28, December 5, 12, & 19 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  Call: (530) 272-8315 for more details.

Downtown Trick or Treat Photos

Friday, October 31st, 2008

So we had  some rain overnight in Grass Valley, but it did not seem to dampen anyone’s spirits this morning when parents and children descended on downtown Grass Valley for some same trick or treating in Mill and Main Street.  A bravo to all the Grass Valley merchants who took part in this event, and especially to the ones who went all out and dressed in costumes!
